Saturday, February 20, 2027 | 10:00 AM to 11:45 AM | Virginia Fire Rescue Conference, Virginia Beach Convention Center
This is the repeat offering of the 8:00 AM session.

Every firefighter has worked for one: the officer who hovers over every task, second-guesses every decision, and turns capable crew members into people who won’t act without permission. Micromanagement doesn’t just frustrate firefighters. It erodes trust, kills initiative, and builds crews that freeze when they need to think on their own. The line between accountability and control is thin, and the fire service culture of high standards and zero tolerance for error makes it easy to blur those lines.

This interactive workshop gives leaders the tools to coach, delegate, and develop trust, the keys to killing micromanagement. With focused discussion, scenario-based exercises, and real-world fire service examples, attendees will distinguish between holding people accountable and controlling their every move. We’ll apply structured coaching and delegation frameworks that build trust and initiative rather than dependence, address performance issues constructively without defaulting to tighter control, and recognize how their leadership style directly impacts crew morale, stress, and long-term development.

The workshop extends these principles to the fireground, examining how incident commanders can maintain accountability through ICS structure and mission-type orders rather than micromanaging crews over the radio. Participants will work through tabletop incident command scenarios where they practice delegating authority, requesting resources, and trusting supervisors to manage their assignments.

This isn’t about lowering standards or going hands-off. It’s about building crews that perform because they’re trusted and developed, not because someone is standing over their shoulder.

Attendees will leave with a practical framework, self-assessment tools, and strategies they can apply on their next shift.

Train. Teach. Lead. Do it on purpose.
